„3E-innovation of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture: research-based and piloted Electricengine refitting of fishing vessels to enhance Environmental and Economic Adriatic Blue Growth“

Fisheries and aquaculture are among the most popular activities in coastal regions worldwide and play a crucial role in the blue economy of the cross-border Adriatic region between Italy and Croatia. Despite significant efforts invested in smart solutions, digitalization, and networking, the sector still lacks innovation and modernization, particularly in its fishing fleet, which remains largely unchanged. Considering the rising costs, various crises, and climate impacts affecting fish stocks, these factors collectively have a substantial impact on the overall sustainability of the sector.

The 3EFISHING project aims to develop and transfer innovations from research to fishermen, farmers, small and medium-sized enterprises, and producers to achieve sector sustainability based on three e-innovation steps: new vessels with hybrid engines, environmental quality improvement through reduced carbon footprint, and economic sustainability for small and medium-sized businesses. The project will introduce hybrid propulsion in vessels within the Italian and Croatian fleets operating in the Adriatic, aligning with the European Green Deal – a pact aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

As part of this project, Cromaris will work on developing prototypes and testing hybrid propulsion engines for vessels. Cromaris will actively participate in introducing innovations to small and medium-sized enterprises and engage in trial, demonstration, and educational activities at sea to showcase the benefits of hybrid engines in vessels. Specifically, two hybrid engines will be installed in one of Cromaris’ catamarans.

By implementing these new innovations, the project will not only enhance environmental quality and reduce carbon footprint but also ensure the long-term economic and ecological sustainability of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
